
Welcome to the Florida Communities Trust Parks Directory
Since 1991, the Department of Community Affairs and Florida Communities Trust have assisted Florida communities by providing grant funds to acquire land for parks and open spaces. As Florida continues to grow, these lands are crucial to protecting the state’s precious natural, cultural and historical resources. Preservation 2000 and Florida Forever funds awarded by the Trust have resulted in a collection of local and regional parks as diverse as Florida’s communities – from beachfront parks like Loggerhead Park Preserve in Melbourne Beach to such urban parks as Tampa’s Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park. Each of these wonderful locations offers a wide range of recreational opportunities while providing Floridians and visitors with the chance to experience nature first-hand.
This directory provides an easy way to find out more about the Florida Communities Trust parks in your community and those you may visit. Park of the Month:
Red Bug Slough PreserveWe are proud to honor Sarasota County's Red Bug Slough Preserve as our Park of the Month for March 2010. Red Bug Slough Preserve was purchased in 2000 and 2001 through Sarasota County's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program with funding assistance provided by Florida Communities Trust. The preserve is home to a variety of animal species, including grey squirrels, marsh rabbits, river otters, an occasional alligator and an assortment of song birds and wildflowers.

Manasota Scrub Preserve
From 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. Enjoy a leisurely walk on the west side of the preserve exploring regions seldom traveled by the regular visitors. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a light jacket, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (optional), camera and hand lens (optional). Register on-line at www.scgov.net. Space for this walk is limited to 20.
Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve (PEAR) Park
From 7 until 11:30 a.m. Experienced volunteers invited to help conduct bird and butterfly surveys. Must be able to identify most common species by sight or sound and have their own binoculars and field guides. Reservations are required.
Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve (PEAR) Park
From 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. Park rangers will identify plants and wildlife during this low-impact hike of about one-quarter mile over paved trails and a boardwalk. Hike is suitable for walkers, strollers and wheelchairs. Reservations are required.
Pier Park
From noon until 1 p.m. (CST). Located at the Aaron Bessant Park portion of Pier Park. The class is free. For more information, visit www.playballinparadise.com.
Angus K. Gholson, Jr. Nature Park and Chattahoochee RV Resort
Starts at 3 p.m. with music provided by local singing groups. Admission is free and food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Brooker Creek Preserve
From 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. In this workshop we use the base of the palm frond, known as the palm boot, as a foundation to create unique wall hangings. The program begins with a pictorial introduction that helps inspire participants to create their own works of art. No art experience is necessary. Participants receive a palm boot to decorate with paint and natural materials. Fee: $10 for materials. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

Join us as we look at how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must, and water and a hat are recommended. Pre-registration is required by noon on the Friday prior to the hike of your choice. Free. All ages welcome - children younger than 6 may find this hike challenging.
Robinson Preserve
From 2 until 4 p.m. Roll through Robinson Preserve on two wheels! Take a 2-mile trip on paved and packed shell trails with stops along the way to learn about Robinson’s resident plants and animals. Participants must bring their own bicycles; helmets are required for participants under the age of 16. Program suitable for all ages. Please call 941-742-5757 ext. 8.
Indrio North Savannahs
From 9:00 until 10:30. Bring your binoculars and come enjoy a peaceful morning among the birds of Florida. This site offers visitors a chance to view some of Florida’s rare and endangered birds and belongs to the Great Florida Birding Trail. Birds commonly observed include; the Florida Scrub Jay, Bald Eagle, and a host of waders, raptors, songbirds, and wood peckers.
Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden
A weeklong event featuring the exhibition "Viva Cuba Libre - The Chugs of Cuba," cooking lessons for traditional Cuban dishes, Salsa dancing, and much, much more! For more information and a full list of events, visit www.keywestbotanicalgarden.org.

Brooker Creek Preserve
From 10:30 until 11:15 a.m. This week features "The Snail’s Spell" by Joanne Ryder. This enchanting tale encourages children to imagine being a snail. They learn how snails move, see, and feel their way through this beautifully illustrated garden. This program also includes a craft, game or other hands-on activity related to the story. Pre-registration is required. Spaces are limited so register early! Free. Recommended ages: 3 – 5.

From 7 until 10 a.m. Experienced bird-watching volunteers invited to help conduct a bird survey. Birders must be able to identify most common birds by sight or sound and have their own binoculars and field guides. Reservations are required.

Bear Point Sanctuary
The tour begins at 1:30 p.m. Preceded by the presentation "Mangroves, Mosquitoes and Man" at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 11 at the St. Lucie County - Fort Pierce Branch Library. Led by Captain and Audubon Warden Chop Lege as part of the Interactive Nature Series. For more information, call (772)462-2787.
Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area
From 9 a.m. until noon. Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, boots or sneakers. We will be working in brush-filled areas – so be prepared to get dirty. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. Restrooms are available at various stores located across the street from the natural area. The Department will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 35 volunteers who register. Volunteers can register for an event by either calling Ann Mathews at 561-233-2426 or emailing amathews@co.palm-beach.fl.us.
Manatee Sanctuary Park
From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Features booths from local community service groups, face painting, a bounce house, obstacle course, and more. For more information please call the Recreation Department at 321-868-1226.
Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden
From 5:30 until 8 p.m., VIPs can enjoy a lakeside dinner and the Tropicana Show. VIP ticket holders also have entrance into the dance with Havana Soul from Miami. Seating is limited. From 7 until 11 p.m., listen to Hot Havana Soul perform their renown Salsa beat on the Courtyard Stage. Salsa dancing encouraged! Cuban hors d’oeurves, a cash bar featuring Mojitos, and a “cigar lounge” complete the ambiance of Havana nightlife. A silent auction will offer one-of-a-kind handmade Cuban silkscreen posters, crafts, jewelry, batik fabrics and items in wood and leather. VIP tickets are $100 for members, $125 for non-members, and include both the Lakeside and Courtyard celebrations. Those who join the Garden that evening qualify for $100 tickets. General Admission, $25 in advance and $30 at the door, is for the Courtyard party, only.

Riverview Pointe Preserve
From 9 until 11 a.m. Join Master Gardener Mike Corso for a leisurely nature walk through DeSoto National Memorial and Riverview Pointe Preserve. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Florida’s native plants. Program suitable for all ages. Please call the Master Gardener Office for reservations at 941-722-4524.
Robinson Preserve
At 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Roll through Robinson Preserve in a covered wagon! Your naturalist tour guide will explain the preserve’s history, resident wildlife, fabulous flowers, and describe preserve highlights. Two 60-minute trips will be taken during the day. A fee of $3.00 per adult and $2.00 per child (includes tax) will be charged. Program suitable for all ages. Reservations are suggested. Seats will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Stop by our classroom anytime between noon and 3:00 pm to participate in a variety of self-guided nature games and activities that will answer these questions and many more. From 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Smokey Bear has been teaching kids how to prevent forest fires for more than sixty years. Did you know that he is based on a real bear? Join us to learn the true story of Smokey Bear and things you can do to help prevent wildfires. Bring your camera to have your picture taken with Smokey after the program. Pre-registration is appreciated. Free. Recommended for families with children of all ages.
Robinson Preserve
From 9 until 11 a.m. Each month, the Master Gardeners host a fabulous nature tour in the salt marshes at Robinson Preserve. Learn more about Florida’s native plants with Master Gardener Sam Starrett on a relaxing stroll through this beautiful coastal property. Program suitable for all ages. Brooker Creek Preserve
From 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. Bring your camera and join local nature photographers Karl and Kathleen Nichter for this two-hour workshop. Learn how to apply basic digital photography techniques and photo composition to create pleasing nature pictures with your own camera. This workshop includes both classroom instruction and practice in the field. Space is limited, so register early. Pre-registration required. Free. Best for adults and children 12 and up.

Bayshore Live Oak Park
From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event will feature opportunities for participants to show their dogs in a variety of classes including Best Puppy (up to 18 months), Best Costume, Best Senior (over 10 years) and Best Adult Dog. Local vendors, demonstrations in obedience and agility training, and other organizations will be on hand as well. Refreshments will be available, so come out and enjoy the day with beautiful Charlotte Harbor in the background. All dogs on leashes welcome! Ten Mile Creek Natural Area
From 8:45 until 11:15 a.m. You deserve a good paddling! Come experience a short paddle up creek with other intermediate paddlers to a remote rookery. Please bring your own canoe/kayak with safety gear.
Bluefield Ranch Natural Area
From 7 p.m. until midnight. Calling all stargazers! Fix your eyes on the sky, miles from the city lights, with the expertise of the local astronomy club members to help guide viewing through professional telescopes. Bring a chair or blanket to view from. Binoculars, red filtered flashlights, and bug spray are also recommended.
Naples Preserve

Robinson Preserve
From 6 until 8 p.m. What delicious delicacies are growing just outside of your backdoor? Join our resident chefs to learn more about the wonderful wild edible plants found in Florida. Participants will sample a variety of plants and will learn proper preparation for items, too. Suitable for participants age 16 and older. Reservations are required. Please call 941-742-5757 ext. 5.
Hickey's Creek Mitigation Park
From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. This six-hour kayak trip begins and ends at Caloosahatchee Regional Park campground. Paddlers should be experienced and/or be in good physical condition for a 5 mile roundtrip paddle on the Great Calusa Blueway which includes Hickey's Creek, one of the areas most scenic waterways. We'll eat lunch and hike at Hickey's Creek Mitigation Park before paddling back. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring your own drink, lunch, sunscreen, binoculars and clothing/shoes that can get wet. We will meet at the campground entrance at 19130 North River Rd. $40 per person. Sheraton Scrub Preserve
From 9 until 11 a.m. Come learn about the only bird species found in Florida and no where else in the world! Learn about the life history of this beautiful and unique bird, including the special habitat in which it lives and its “family values”. Please bring binoculars if you have them; if we’re lucky, we should be able to get a very close look at them.

Join us to learn how to invite the birds and butterflies to your yard by attending this landscaping for wildlife program.
